Does the tide ebb and flow? Of course it does but here on the Marina berthed onto a pontoon (walkway) it can sometomes be hard to tell.

The pontoon raises and lowers with the tide so the pontoon is always the same distance down from the boat. This is quite recent knowledge to me having not really given it any thought before we moored near one at Weir Quay.

At the moment we are experiencing Spring Tides and there is a greater difference between the highest and lowest tide with the high tides being higher and the low tides lower.  Walking up to the facilities Friday (yesterday) morning the tide was out and, where there is a man made sill across the Marina, this was exposed with the seabirds poking around the seaweed for food.

The gangway between he land and the pontoon was also at a steep angle and the pontoon pilings loomed a good few metres high every 20 feet or so. Walking up in the evening at the top of the tide however, I’m the same height of the pilings , the sill has disappeared well under the water and the gangway is sloped slightly the other way. When I checked the daily information. board, it says that the tide is 5.3m. That’s over 5m difference from the low tide earlier. As I said it’s sometimes harder to appreciate the ebb and flow with no dramatic change to view.
